Tanzania – Water and Sanitation Project

Tanzania – Water and Sanitation Project

Following the success of the Jamaica Water and Sanitation Project in 2009, Projects Abroad and partners, Bridgit Water are turning their attention this summer to Tanzania.

Mount Meru

One of the Directors of Bridgit Water, Wendy Tisdell visited Jamaica as a volunteer with Projects Abroad in April 2008. After spending only a few days at her placement her own background as a Director of a water and sewerage infrastructure company brought her to the realisation that she had a lot more to offer than simply a pair of hands and her time.

Wendy’s company undertook to sponsor and fund the Water and Sanitation Project in Jamaica in conjunction with Projects Abroad volunteers.

In summer 2010 the Tanzania Water and Sanitation Project will be running for one month from the 12th July.

Voluntary Work on the Water and Sanitation Project

Volunteers are needed to help install guttering and set up new tank systems to catch rainwater at an orphanage and hospital and health clinic in Arusha.

Tanzanian Hosts

The work at the hospital and health clinic will benefit both the patients and the wider community as the current water supply is sporadic and unreliable. The current water set-up is irregular and often runs out. During this time there is insufficient water to cook, clean and this can lead to an increase in infections. There is currently a running stream running through the grounds but it is contaminated and unsafe to use.

The orphanage has 10 children living there and over 100 children from poor backgrounds who come on a daily basis to the orphanage for food and schooling. The water project will benefit the orphans, the school children, their teachers and carers and approximately 120 neighbours in the surrounding community. The local water supply is very unreliable and the supply is not regular, so at times there is simply no water with which to cook and clean.

The assistance of the volunteers and specialised staff will really help to make a tangible and long-lasting difference to the lives of those at the hospital and orphanage.

Volunteers on this project will work from Monday till Friday from about 8am – 3pm and have weekends free. All volunteers will live with host families and take the local bus to work.
