Ghana Volunteer Takes on Round the World Yacht Race
Following on from a 3 month placement in Ghana, Harriet Walker has been inspired to take on a new challenge, a round the world yacht race! Here she tells us more:
‘This time last year I had just arrived in Cape Coast, Ghana and given half the chance I would get on a flight back over there tomorrow! It was my three month trip of a lifetime that inspired me to take on my next big adventure – The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
Travelling with Projects Abroad in Ghana allowed me to meet other volunteers from a diverse range of nationalities, ages and backgrounds and I can honestly say that it was those friendships created between housemates and colleagues that made an already amazing experience into a spectacular one. It was meeting these individuals that has inspired me to take it one step further and I now want to meet more like minded travellers from all corners of the globe!
The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race takes place every two years and is unique in that it welcomes complete novices; therefore, it really is sailed by people like you and me - people who are eager for the challenge of a lifetime both physically and mentally. I have been a dinghy sailor for as long as I can remember, but as most of you probably recognise there is a massive difference between dinghies and yachts, so it will be as much of a shock to the system for me as for everyone else!
Prior to starting the race all of the crew undertake rigorous training as we must be prepared for every eventuality. Over the course of the last few races Mother Nature has been known to show her full force, resulting in a crew having to abandon ship in the middle of the ocean and many being evacuated via helicopter due to various turns of events!
If you have volunteered overseas or travelled before you will understand why I am now embarking on my next big adventure. I will be writing news updates every now and again to update you on my progress and then to allow you an insight into what life on a 70ft stripped down ocean racing yacht entails!’
