Your whole life is ahead of you… So what now?
Calling all wanderers, activists, dreamers and adventurers; your next journey is about to begin.
You’ve just received your A-level results and you’re suddenly feeling impossibly free.
Life stretches out before you with a thousand crossroads pointing in all directions and you feel overwhelmed by all the choices ahead of you. There are so many things you could do, so many things you could be.
Part of you longs to explore this new freedom.
To climb mountains and stand on the rooftops of the world. To leave footprints on deserted beaches and spot giant tortoises. To skip past temples and admire wild elephants. To ascend the thousand steps to Machu Picchu and visit ancient kingdoms of old. To build castles in the sand and tell stories to delight wide-eyed children. To tip-toe through rainforests and marvel at the phenomenal diversity of life. To experience true meaning and to be the change that you want to see in the world.
Maybe you need a few months. Maybe you need a year. Maybe you need to be free, have an adventure and reassess; to gain valuable life lessons, insight and experience.
Maybe you need a gap year
A gap year can be one of the most valuable experiences that you will ever have. It can teach you so much about yourself, the world and your role in it. While helping you to develop personally, it can also assist you professionally by giving you the skills and CV you need to take the next step.
At Projects Abroad we have a wide range of programmes that can be joined by volunteers on their gap years. Whether you’re planning six months ahead or want to go away as soon as possible give us a call on 021 671 7008 to find out about the projects you can join. Our projects run all year round and you can choose to volunteer for two weeks or several months.
Every year we hear from numerous law, veterinary and medical students who want to add overseas experience to their UCAS forms. We can organise placements for anyone wanting to gain this type of experience or those who just want to take some time out and do something a bit different.
Do something different
After what probably feels like a lifetime of studying take time after completing your A-levels to escape from home and do something completely different. You might want to live with Nomads on the edge of the Gobi desert, or learn to scuba dive and conserve the marine environment in Thailand or teach IT in Sri Lanka. There are endless opportunities.
Get work experience
If you want to be a teacher, lawyer, journalist, doctor or vet what better way to get experience than to get hands-on experience overseas? You might help on medical outreach programmes in Tanzania, join a Human Rights project in South Africa or teach English in a school in Jamaica. There are a wide range of opportunities.
Learn a language
Improve your language skills by immersing yourself in another country’s culture and heritage. Join one of our Language Courses and you will be able to live with a local family who will be pleased to help you practise whether you want to learn French in West Africa, Spanish in Latin America, Arabic in Morocco or even Russian in Moldova. Don’t worry if you aren’t a linguist, you don’t need to speak any languages before you join most of our programmes.
Have a stirring in your heart and itchy feet? Joining a project and living with a local host family is a great way to prepare for further travelling. Our local staff members have a wealth of knowledge they are willing to share with you. Volunteers often go travelling over the weekends whilst on their placements and many volunteers also take the opportunity to travel together further afield after finishing their placements.
You can read articles about some of the best places to travel on our Travel Blog.
In the words of Jack Kerouac, “Live, travel, adventure, bless, and don't be sorry.”
Don’t worry, you’ll figure it out. Take a gap year and start a new adventure. We’d love to help you plan it and we’ll be by your side every step of the way.
