Our Medicine & Spanish High School Special in Bolivia places you in a Spanish-speaking environment and gives you a deeper insight into how medicine is practiced abroad. Spend your time observing doctors during their consultations and in different hospital departments, participating in medical outreaches, and taking Spanish classes. Make the most of your trip and expand your medical knowledge by asking questions and making notes about the various illnesses and treatments you see.
In Bolivia, medical staff will teach you about traditional medicine and lead workshops on performing first aid, doing stitches, and giving injections. You will also participate in medical outreaches in a remote village in Cochabamba. Since there is no hospital nearby, the outreaches are often the only medical assistance they receive. Help check vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature for children and the elderly at these outreaches.
In addition to working in hospitals and on outreaches, you will spend a morning at a veterinary clinic. Here, you will observe surgery on animals at the clinic. In most cases, animal organs are similar to human organs, so this gives you a better understanding of what surgery on a person could be like. The vet will talk you through the operation and explain everything step-by-step.
Bolivia is a Spanish-speaking country, which makes it the perfect place to learn and practice Spanish. Speaking another language and improving your communication skills is important for anyone going into the medical field, as you may find yourself working with patients who have limited English. During your time in Bolivia, you will attend around ten hours of Spanish classes, which are separated according to your level. A professional teacher teaches these classes.
During your stay, you will live with a local host family who will welcome you into their home. You will share meals together, exchange stories, and get to know how a typical Bolivian family lives. Over the weekend, you will have plenty of time to explore and visit well-known Bolivian landmarks such as the Tiwanaku Ruins, Sun Island and Lake Titicaca, the largest lake in South America.
Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work.
