Taking your Medicine Elective in Mongolia will give you a great deal of valuable work-experience supported by some of the top doctors and surgeons in the country. Although in accordance with Mongolian law you will not be able to directly treat patients, you can help to take basic observations, help prepare equipment for surgery, transfer patients to surgery, observe surgery, and check patients post-surgery.
Medicine Elective placements in Mongolia are based in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, where you will be working in busy central hospitals. Medicine and healthcare practice in Mongolia is typically 'Western', but there are also a number of private complementary medical clinics where you can also spend some time, to help broaden your medicine and healthcare experience.
You will find the facilities are generally of a very basic standard and patients will often have travelled vast distances to attend appointments. You will learn a lot about the medical profession in a developing country while in Mongolia.
Projects Abroad are experienced in working with students wishing to take their elective placement abroad. We can coordinate with your university to ensure the requirements of your elective module can be met. Our in-country staff will liaise with you and help with any pre-departure paperwork. When in Mongolia, you will be assigned a supervisor who is a qualified doctor and experienced in mentoring Elective students.
Your Role on an Elective Placement
You will have a mainly observational role. You will shadow the local doctors while they work. The doctors are keen for you to achieve as much as possible during your placement and will be available to discuss specific cases and answer your questions. By showing enthusiasm and gaining the confidence of the doctors and nurses by proving your ability, you may well be given more to do. The supervisors on our Medicine placements in Mongolia have a lot of time for enthusiastic Medicine Elective students.
Projects Abroad offers monthly workshops providing volunteers with lessons about traditional treatments, the history of the Mongolian healthcare system and practical lessons on basic medical procedures - such as how to check blood pressure. We also organise regular medical outreaches for students. You may be involved in assisting with basic medical check-ups at a community centre for homeless people, or assisting with a hand hygiene campaign at one of the local hospitals. These help you to gain a greater understanding of the Mongolian healthcare system.
While you are in Mongolia, you will live with one of our hospitable Mongolian host families. You will become part of the Projects Abroad volunteer community. There is much to see in the area and a lively bunch of volunteers to experience it with.
Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
