Taking your Dentistry Elective in Togo will expose you to a style of dental practice that will be different from what you are used to at home. You will learn a lot from your time here and it will open your eyes to how dentistry is managed in a developing country.
Projects Abroad has experience catering for Elective students. We are able to liaise with your university to ensure your placement fulfils your elective criteria. Our in-country staff will be in regular communication with you pre-departure to help with your arrangements.
When you are in Togo you will have a dedicated supervisor, a qualified dentist, who will mentor you. You can discuss case studies with them, and ask any questions you may have. They are keen to make sure your time in Togo is worthwhile and you learn a lot from your experience.
Your Role on an Elective Placement
Dentistry Elective Students will be placed in a public hospital that is also a teaching and research facility. Your role will be that of an intern and you will spend time shadowing local staff. Once you become familiar with treatments and you have demonstrated your knowledge of dentistry, you can get a more hands on role. Aspects of dentistry you can become involved in include consultations and general check-ups. You may also be able to observe more complex procedures.
There are various outreach projects you may get the chance to be involved in. You can help with oral hygiene awareness, for example, by showing the children how to brush their teeth properly. You could also help assist qualified dentistry students in schools and orphanages while they do dental checks and carry out minor procedures.
Requirements for Elective Students
Elective students on all medical related projects in Togo need a good level of French. Most of the staff and patients do not speak English. It is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in the hospital.
You will live with a Togolese host family while you are on your Dentistry Elective. You have access to our Projects Abroad volunteer community and have the opportunity to explore the area with them during the time off from your placement.
You can join the Dentistry Elective project in Togo for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. These projects have been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term Elective placements. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the hospital or centre please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone working for a longer period.
Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
