If you are considering taking your Midwifery Elective abroad, then Togo could be the perfect choice. You will learn a lot from your placement and will be working with dedicated staff in facilities that are fairly well equipped. You will get a good understanding of midwifery practice in a developing country.
Students on all medical related projects in Togo need a good level of French. Most of the staff and patients do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in the hospital.
Organising Your Elective Placement
Projects Abroad are happy to liaise with your university to make sure the objectives of your elective are met at your allocated placement. We have in-country staff who are experienced in co-ordinating elective students. You will be given a dedicated supervisor who will be fully qualified member of staff.
Your supervisor will support you during your stay and will ensure that you have time to discuss special cases and will answer your questions. Staff are keen for you to have a fulfilling time at their medical facility.
Your Role in Togo
As the midwifery profession in Togo is very different to what you are used to, you will firstly spend a minimum of a week observing. You may get a more hands-on role if you have demonstrated your knowledge to the team. You may then be able to help carry out consultations, treat pregnant women and assist with births. You will provide much-needed support to the women.
You will be placed in the maternity department of a large hospital or one of the more rural medical centres in Lomé where women come especially to have their babies. Staff will be happy to receive you and have you help them.
While in Togo, you will stay with one of our local host families where you will experience the real day-to-day lives of the local Togolese community. You will be able to meet and socialise with other Projects Abroad volunteers and explore what the local area has to offer with them.
You can join the Midwifery Electives project in Togo for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. These projects have been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term stay, for both the placement and the Elective student. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the hospital or centre please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone joining for a longer period.
Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
