Care in Sri Lanka

Based in several small towns along the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, you will be working with your fellow volunteers in day care centres and kindergartens. There is a huge variety of work available, however all the work has one basic requirement in common: a love of working with children.

Your role will vary from helping children learn the alphabet, organising arts and crafts activities, playing sports or reading with a child individually.

During your time there you will also get involved with some practical work such as painting and decorating a classroom, creating a lasting impact at the placement. This work is greatly appreciated by both the children and local staff.

You will live with a local host family, which allows you to be fully immersed in the Sri Lankan way of life.

During the weekend we will take you to visit a palm fringed beach that Sri Lanka is famous for or visit one of the spectacular ancient cities.

For those who would like to volunteer for longer, this project is available as a four week program on select dates. On the four week program, you will be able to spend more time with the children and learn even more about Sri Lankan culture. You will also get extra visits and activities arranged during the other weekends such as visits to Galle, the Dutch Fort, and Unuwatuna beach, as well as some of the local markets and a traditional Kandyan dancing show.

Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work. If you want to know more about their achievements, read our 2018 High School Specials Impact Report.
