Conservation & Community in Kenya

You will stay at the reserve in same sex dormitories along with our other regular volunteers. There is a communal area at the front of the volunteer accommodation with stunning views over the reserve.

Volunteering on this project is hard work, a lot of fun and extremely interesting. You will join in with the on-going conservation work. Every day is different and your work will be varied. One of the main aims is to protect and monitor the endangered Rothschild's giraffe. In addition you will be involved in removing alien plants, repairing fences and roads, preventing soil erosion, and collecting data on different species and birds in the area. In addition to working in the reserve, you will also participate in a community outreach for one day. The outreach activities vary depending on the needs of the community at the time. They could include teaching children about the importance of protecting the environment and wild animals, teaching English, playing sports like football, or building a toilet or oven.

Volunteers will be accompanied at all times by our experienced conservation staff who have a great knowledge of the region's geography and wildlife. They will pass on their expertise and enthusiasm to you and you will learn a lot.

During the weekend you will get the opportunity to visit one of Kenya's National Parks.

Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work. If you want to know more about their achievements, read our 2018 High School Specials Impact Report.
