A large chameleon at the Conservation project in Madagascar.

Madagascar is renowned for its rich environmental biodioversity; in particular, its lush rainforests which are home to one of the highest percentages of endemic species on the planet. Our Rainforest Conservation & Community High School Special is the perfect opportunity to combine both environmental activities and hands-on work which will benefit the local people.

Your days will be split between the different Conservation & Community activities. The environmental work takes place at a local national park where our Conservation placement is based. Your efforts will contribute to important ongoing biodiversity and environmental impact studies. Activities include helping at an endangered plant nursery; removing alien plants; bird, amphibian, reptile and lemur censuses; maintenance of park trails and creating materials for environmental awareness campaigns. You will also get to take part in Conservation workshops with a local guide.

The community aspect of the project involves renovation work in Andasibe, which may include painting walls of local buildings and educational murals at schools, setting up a playground or creating a vegetable garden.

Volunteers stay at a guesthouse. You will get to take part in different social and cultural events in your time off, organised by Projects Abroad. These may include games night, a visit to the national park, picnics and dance lessons.

We also arrange exciting weekend trips to Lake Rasoabe, the UNESCO site at Ambohimanga, and the capital Antananarivo, where volunteers can explore the local markets and restaurants.

Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work. If you want to know more about their achievements, read our 2017 High School Specials Impact Report.
