Learn French in Senegal
Although the tribal language of Wolof is the mother tongue of most Senegalese people in St Louis, French is the main language of daily communication in Senegal. Volunteers living and working in Senegal will find that French is a necessity when it comes to buying items in a shop, chatting with your placement supervisor, or interacting with your host family.
Most of the lessons take place at the French Cultural Centre, on St Louis Island. You will receive free membership to the library and gain free admission to concerts and film nights, which are regularly held at the centre. To supplement your studies you will live with a local host family, where you can put your new vocabulary into practice.
There are two options when it comes to learning French in Senegal. You can choose to join an intensive standalone Language Course, where you will receive 15 hours of personal classes per week from fully qualified French language teachers. During your first lesson your teacher will assess your ability, and from then on the classes will be tailored to your level.
After completing your French Language Course, you can also choose to spend time working on one of our Senegal volunteer projects, such as Teaching or Care, and put your newly acquired language skills to use in a practical working environment.
The other option is to study French alongside your regular volunteer placement. We offer 5-hour, 14-hour, or 30-hour French language add-on courses. These prices are in addition to your main project price. Please take a look at our Senegal language prices for more information.
Depending on your skills and when you travel with us, you may have your classes alone with the teacher or be in a small group with two or three others.
