Host Family Accommodation

A Projects Abroad host family at their home in Sri Lanka

A big motivation for going abroad is to immerse yourself in the culture of the country where you will be working. Projects Abroad knows that staying with a local host family is the best way to do that. You don’t want to live in a bubble while you are abroad!

You won’t live with just any family when you volunteer with Projects Abroad. Our families are carefully chosen for security, comfort, and friendliness. Many hosts are associated with our programmes - for example, a teacher or headmistress at one of our partner schools or a doctor at one of our medical placements.

You also won’t be on your own. We have a thriving volunteer community in all of our destinations. You will live with a host family alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer; sometimes three or four.

Your room will be modest but comfortable. Host families live in secure houses and neighbourhoods and are closely screened and monitored. Our full time local staff hold regular check-ups, including one prior to a new volunteer moving in.

We also ensure they can provide you with quality home-cooked meals. Food is at the heart of a society, so be prepared to eat your fill of local cuisine!

In line with our commitment to being a positive influence in the communities with whom we work, host families are decently compensated. They are also interviewed for friendliness and to make sure they are motivated by the right reasons. They will welcome you into their family and home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture.

We believe that living with a host family offers an incredible experience that really makes a placement with Projects Abroad unique.

There are some locations where host families are not possible, mainly on our Conservation projects. But in all destinations we evaluate your accommodation for quality and comfort. Your food will still be provided for by Projects Abroad as well, usually by a local cook.

For over 20 years Projects Abroad have been experts in volunteering abroad, work experience and gap year placements.

Founded in 1992, Projects Abroad has now sent nearly 100,000 volunteers from all walks of life to volunteer projects in the developing world.
